Chapter 11: Spatial Context and Attention
Space speaks.
A messy desk says: not yet.
An open book says: continue here.
A phone beside the bed says: five more minutes.
We often underestimate space. We think it is only background, while willpower is the real force.
But space is not only background.
Space is a persistent prompt.
Space Sets Defaults
The thing that happens most easily in a room is often the room’s true function.
If your desk is always covered with clutter, it may not be a work desk. It may be an avoidance zone.
If your bed always has your phone beside it, it may not be a rest zone. It may be an entrance to the feed.
People who manage themselves well do not leave everything to willpower.
They design spaces that make the right actions easier.
Give Important Behaviors a Place
If you want to read, give reading a place.
If you want to write, give writing a place.
If you want to exercise, let your shoes be visible.
Small design matters because it is small enough to happen.
A goal without a place is easily pushed aside by life.
